I’ve learned firsthand that a simple (read mindful) morning routine and a few intentional encouraging words can make a lot of difference to your day and life, transformative. What’s the first thing you do or say to yourself in the morning?
As for me, I like to start with a grounding ritual that connects me to something more profound.
I fold my hands, say a little prayer, and touch the ground before bringing my hands to my forehead as a mark of respect to Mother Earth.
In our tradition, we recognize her as a gentle, strong figure who supports us daily.
I seek forgiveness for stepping on her and honoring our connection with all life around us; something we call dharma or virtuous living.
Then I rub my hands together and gently place them over my face, touching my eyes. It’s a simple practice, but it feels powerful.
In Hindu belief, the hands are thought to carry the energies of Lakshmi (prosperity), Saraswati (knowledge), and Govinda (protection).
This small act helps me feel centered, grounded, and grateful, and brings a calm, focused energy to start my day.
I thank God for another day with my loved ones—a chance to hustle, enjoy life, and embrace whatever comes my way.
After freshening up, I walk (it’s meditative) with my partner in a nearby park, breathing in the fresh air and chatting about family, friends, and life.
We have a little pact to keep our conversations positive, which sets the tone.
After our walk, I come home to a cup of black coffee lovingly made by my husband (or a steaming cup of masala chai when I feel like spoiling myself). I sip it while spending a few peaceful minutes with my plants in the garden, feeling connected to everything around me.
Then, it’s time to dive into daily chores, like prepping breakfast and getting ready for work (mostly from home).
But here’s the thing: I keep saying positive affirmations to myself as I go through these little routines. They help me start each day with confidence and calm.
Choosing words that lift instead of bring me down has brightened my outlook, improved my self-esteem, helped me tackle challenges calmly and confidently, and truly improved my life. Adding affirmations is like planting seeds of positivity that you water each morning.
At night, I double the effect by writing these affirmations in my gratitude journal, giving myself a gentle nudge for the next day.
But I wasn’t always like this (changed for the good). There was a time when my mornings were a mad rush—tea in one hand, phone in the other, scrolling through emails, and juggling chores. No calm, no focus, just running on autopilot.
Then, one day, while researching the power of words, I came across Dr. Emoto’s work. He experimented with how words carry energy and how the ones we choose can lift us or bring us down if we’re not careful. I had no clue there was actual science behind it!
It made me think about how often I’d say things like, “I’m so clumsy” or “I’m not good enough” without a second thought. I didn’t realize those little throwaway phrases shaped my feelings about myself.
Then I read Bruce Lee’s words that hit home: “Don’t speak negatively about yourself, even as a joke. Words are energy and cast spells.” One of the simplest yet powerful quotes. Suddenly, it all clicked—I didn’t have to be my worst critic. I could choose words that lift me instead.
